Christ the Redeemer celebrates the Maria da Penha Law

In this Thursday, August 7, Christ the Redeemer will receive a purple lighting to celebrate eight years of enactment of the Maria da Penha Law. The initiative is by the Special Secretariat of Policies for Women, aiming to alert the public about violence against women and also to stimulate complaints, divulging the Dial 180, specialized in this crime.

To the Rector of the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary, Father Omar Raposo, the occasion is timely to clarify the society about the importance of the law, which has standardized a number of mechanisms to prevent and curb violence against women, both domestically and in the family:

"Human life deserves dignity and respect. And Christ the Redeemer reminds us of all these values. There is no doubt that the creation of the Act was an important step to guarantee women rights. It is absurd that, for example, between 2009 and 2011, 16 900 deaths of women occurred in Brazil, by gender conflict, especially in cases of assault by intimate partners, according to the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA). We must defend these lives", he warns.

In Brazil, the Maria da Penha Law - Law 11,340 / 2006, is a milestone for the protection of women suffering violence. And, since it came into force in 2006, about 700 000 lawsuits were based on it to promote punishments, measures of protection and care, according to the National Council of Justice.
