On the night of the last Wednesday, the 11th, the Monument to Christ the Redeemer was illuminated with the colors of the teams participating in the 2014 World Cup. A true spectacle of lights projected on top of Corcovado. With this action, the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with RIOLUZ and the City of Rio de Janeiro, wished to welcome the athletes participating in the World Cup, which, on home soil, certainly more than a soccer show, will give a testimony of fraternization among peoples.
The programming done by Embraarte gave Christ the Redeemer the colors of the flags of each country participating in the World Cup, with synchronization of a stretch of every nation’s anthem, by 30 seconds. The colored lighting was presented looping for about half an hour. To close the light show, at the sound of the National Anthem, the Monument received the green and yellow of the Brazilian flag. And the color of the canary selection remained projected on the Monument throughout the whole morning, to wish good luck to the players in the opening of the World Cup, on this Thursday, the 12th.
For the last three years, Christ the Redeemer has had the best lighting systems in the world, provided by OSRAM German multinational. Altogether, there are 258 fixtures with LED technology, the models Wall Washer Shield AC XB-36 and XB Liner Shield AC 27. These projectors are individually controllable, and have LEDs of different colors like green, blue and red, and it is precisely the mixture of these colors that allows a variation of more than 16 million possibilities.
The rector of the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, father Omar Raposo, during the ceremony, said a prayer asking for peace on competition days and gave the Redeemer’s blessing to all the people participating in the sporting event:
"Sports always give us opportunities to witness the beauty that exists in fellowship among people. We must increasingly learn what Pope Francis said: Belonging to a sports club means rejecting every form of selfishness and isolation. It is an opportunity to meet and to be with others, to help one another, to compete in mutual esteem and grow in brotherhood, "said the priest.
"This stage lighting was invaluable, because it indicated Rio’s local spirit for the World Cup," said the president of RIOLUZ, Henrique Pinto.
"It was very special being able to prepare this work which symbolizes all the reception to the visiting countries, on this beautiful time of fellowship which we´ll live," witnessed Embraarte’s lighting designer Gabriel Maritato.
"The lighting of the Monument to Christ the Redeemer has what is most modern in the world on this segment. It is a great joy to see our project valued on this beautiful event on the eve of the World Cup”, commented Rafael Biagioni, Projects & Solutions channel Manager from OSRAM Brazil.
