On the night of the last Tuesday, July 1st, Christ the Redeemer was illuminated with red and white colors to celebrate Canada’s National Day. The action sought to strengthen good relations between Brazil and the largest country in the Americas, which, on this date, in 1867, ceased to be a British colony to become a nation.

The rector of the Sanctuary of Christ the Redeemer, father Omar Raposo, and the Consul General of Canada, Sanjeev Chowdhury attended the celebratory ceremonial protocol, during which the lighting with the official colors of the country was reflected on the Monument.

"We are very happy with the acceptance of our request and we recognize this event as a great honor and a testament to the excellent relations between Brazil and Canada," said the Consul General of Canada.

For father Omar, being able to celebrate Canada’s National Day at the Monument to Christ the Redeemer, during the World Cup season, was a sign of unity among peoples and also a wonderful opportunity to say to each nation gathering in Rio de Janeiro that Christ the Redeemer is for everyone:

"Our Lord Jesus Christ was present in the joys and pains of all men, regardless of nationality. Therefore, Christ the Redeemer is always with open arms to all nations and welcomes everyone who comes to him", he said.

Previously, one of the events that best brought the two nations together was the World Youth Day, which happened last year in the Marvelous City. About 1,200 young Canadian pilgrims were in Brazilian soil to meet Pope Francis, allowing the Canadian Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro to develop an even closer relationship with the Archdiocese.
