Do not be afraid of what God asks of you

We live in a world in which everything changes all the time. We receive countless information every minute and, thanks to globalization and to the speed of information through the internet, we have a feeling that all things around us happen too fast and are not ever lasting.

But does everything really need to be ephemeral? Do we have to be this "walking metamorphosis" as sung by Raul Seixas? We can’t be like this, especially with regard to people. The ones who are part of our life today can’t be disregarded tomorrow, just because everything changes all the time and we decided to change our mind, even about our feelings and choices. This is not "being open" to new life, but to adhere to what is temporary, relativizing everything, including our commitment to each other.

It is interesting to remember Pope Francis’ posture during the meeting with the World Youth Day volunteers, here in Rio de Janeiro, in 2013, when he requested: "God calls us for definitive choices. (...) In the culture of the temporary, of the relative, many preach that the important thing is "to enjoy" the moment, that is not worth to commit for life, to make definitive choices, "forever", since we do not know what tomorrow reserves.

As a result of that I ask you to be revolutionary, I ask that you go against the tide; yes, I ask you to rebel: to rebel against this culture of the provisory that, deep down, believes that you are not able to take responsibilities, believes that you are not able to truly love. I have confidence in you, young people, and I pray for you. "

The discovery of our vocation and our donation to each other through it, is something beautiful, sacred, and the full path to our personal fulfillment. If you are, like me, called to priesthood, or if your vocation is to matrimony, or even to the religious life, you need to stop being afraid of what God is asking of you! Yes, you are capable of assuming definitive commitments. Are you up to the challenge?  We’re together in this!
